Kianda School dominate fourth edition of PIPSSA Swimming Championship

The championship acted as a qualifier event for next month's Bush Gala Invitational event

Kianda School emerged the overall winners of the fourth edition of the 2023 Private and International Preparatory Schools Sports Association (PIPSSA) Swimming Championship after winning a total of 128 medals in various time-trial events held last weekend at the Moi Educational Center in Nairobi.

In the championship that attracted 23 schools in the region, Kianda School scooped up 48 golds, 47 silvers and 38 bronze medals to finish ahead of Dashing Dolphins Swim Club and Strathmore School that came in second and third respectively with 112 and 79 medals respectively.

In the boy’s only category, Strathmore School came out victors as they averaged 1792.50 points and ahead of Juja St. Peters School and Dashing Dolphins Swim Club that wrapped up the top podium positions.

Kianda School - with 4885 points - topped the girls category with Dashing Dolphins and Juja St. Peters School finished in second and third positions respectively on 1179 and 791 points respectively.

“We take this opportunity to appreciate all stakeholders for making PIPSSA Invitational Swimming Championships a huge success and the turnout was amazing,” a statement from the PIPSSA-Kenya Secretariat read on Monday. “It was a true testament to the growth of our swimming with over 400 participants taking the plunge and showcasing their skill across various levels.”

In the individual category, Mary Gathoni and Grace Munyiri of Umoja Sharks and Kianda School dominated the 7 and Under 100m category with the duo Britney Zawadi and Glowy Corazon of Umoja Sharks and Haviller Swim Club in the 8-9 years category.

Gift Okoth was the winner of the senior category with a final time of 1:38.27 with Strathmore School emerging the winners of the 100m medley relay.

In notable select performances, swimmers from Mugumo Primary School and Kiandutu Slums in Thika emerged with inspiring performances in a bid to join the rest of the swimmers in the Bush Gala set to select swimmers for the international meets.

The gala, apart from awarding quality awards for the top swimmers in different time categories, acted as a qualifying event for the famous Alliance 'Bush' Invitational Swimming Gala scheduled for July, 2023 at Alliance Girls High School, Kiambu.

PIPSSA Kenya will next hold the Rift Valley Swimming Championships at the Shah Lalji Academy in Nakuru on 10 June 2023.
